Child abuse and neglect cases increase in Indiana
Statistics indicate that children in southern Indiana experienced higher rates of abuse and neglect than in other parts of the state. In Scott County, 50.4 per 1,000 kids experienced abuse or neglect.
Crawford, Orange and Scott counties all made the list of 10 counties with the highest rates of child abuse and neglect per 1,000 children under 18.
"These are children that are going to our churches, going to our schools, that are in our family," said Pam Darnall, CEO of Family of Children's Place. "We do have these challenges."
Family and Children's Place has offices in Kentucky and Indiana. Darnall said in an average year, the agency will work with 6,000 people. In southern Indiana, they will assist more than 550 families.
"Child abuse and neglect knows no socioeconomic boundaries," Darnall said. "It knows no racial boundaries, no neighborhood boundaries."
Darnall said the community should feel a responsibility to make sure every child can live a happy, healthy life.
